The Real Roadblocks in Your Career Journey Are Where You’re Not Looking

How shifting your focus inward can unlock your next career breakthrough.

Many professionals believe their career challenges come from external forces, but often, the most significant blockers are internal. True career clarity begins with looking inward. In this article, I’ll explore how tuning into your internal landscape can reveal what’s holding you back and open the door to meaningful change.

A Personal Story: Getting Lost on the Road

Years ago, I took a road trip with my partner at the time, from Italy to the Netherlands to visit my sister. It was winter, and we decided to travel overnight; 12 hours on the road, passing through Switzerland and Germany, hoping to avoid traffic and make the most of our holiday.

But somewhere in Germany, things took a turn.

It was dark. Raining. Cold. And this was before smartphones with real-time GPS. We were relying on an old TomTom, one of those satnavs that didn’t update live and had no idea there were roadblocks ahead.

The device kept rerouting us in endless circles, sending us down closed roads, then back again, over and over. We were in the middle of nowhere. No people around. No signs. No clear help. And neither of us spoke German.

After a few failed attempts at petrol stations and a growing sense of helplessness, we finally found someone who pointed us in the right direction. Three hours later, we were back on track.

This kind of detour doesn’t only happen on physical journeys.
It happens in professional journeys too.

But while a roadblock on a 12-hour drive might delay you by a few hours, in your career… it could mean years of going around in circles — or never getting back on track at all.

When the Blocks Aren’t External

Many professionals feel frustrated, unfulfilled, and overwhelmed, without fully understanding why. They change companies, teams, or even industries, hoping the discomfort will pass.

But it doesn’t.

Because the real blocks often aren’t on the road.
They’re inside us.

Without awareness, without shedding light on these internal blockers — we stay stuck.

  • Stuck in cycles of overwork.
  • Stuck in careers that no longer feel like ours.
  • Stuck in roles that drain instead of energise.

And the hardest part? We may not even realise we’re stuck.
We just feel tired. Frustrated. Disconnected. Like something’s missing — but we can’t name it.

Common Internal Roadblocks

Here are a few internal blocks you might recognise:

  • Fear of failure
  • Perfectionism
  • Self-doubt
  • Confusion about values
  • Overwhelm
  • Self-sabotage and limiting beliefs
  • Procrastination

These invisible blocks can shape our choices for years, not because we lack potential, but because we lack clarity.

The Power of Awareness

You can’t shift what you can’t see.

I once worked with a client who came to me feeling lost and pressured to always “work hard.” On the surface, she had every reason to feel proud: multiple degrees, including an MSc and PhD. But something felt wrong.

She was exhausted. Stuck. She couldn’t give herself permission to change direction, even though her heart was no longer in it.

As we worked together, we uncovered a deep-rooted, unconscious belief:
She felt guilty for wanting something different.

Her parents had worked tirelessly to support her education, and stepping away from her academic path felt like betraying their sacrifice. She couldn’t name this feeling until we made space to explore it together.

After we worked through that and other internal blockers, and built a sense of inner alignment along with a clear plan forward, she finally shared her feelings with her parents. Their response?

The only thing that mattered to them was her happiness.

The block had never been external. It had always lived inside her mind.

We carry beliefs so embedded they feel like truth.
But when clarity emerges, a new energy is released — one that brings relief, permission, and forward momentum.

The Cost of Staying Stuck

Remaining in these internal loops isn’t just frustrating, it’s costly:

  • Burnout from work that drains you.
  • Missed opportunities due to fear or guilt.
  • Loss of confidence from constant self-doubt.
  • Emotional fatigue that affects all areas of life.

What’s Possible When You Clear the Path

When you begin to remove these internal blocks, everything can shift:

  • Clarity about what you want
  • Confidence to move forward
  • Fulfilment that feels authentic, not performative
  • Resilience to face uncertainty with self-trust
  • Living purposefully in the present moment

Imagine waking up with a sense of direction, not because someone gave you permission, but because you’ve claimed it for yourself.

How to Begin

If you’re feeling stuck or at a crossroads, here are four steps to help you reclaim your path:

  1. Reflect on your values. What truly matters to you — now, not five years ago?
  2. Identify your internal blocks. What beliefs or fears might be keeping you stuck?
  3. Create a simple roadmap. You don’t need all the answers — just the next right step.
  4. Seek support. You don’t have to do this alone. A professional can help you see what you haven’t yet been able to name.

Final Note

This is the work I do. I help professionals uncover the invisible roadblocks holding them back. Together, we bring unconscious patterns into the light, so you can move forward with clarity and confidence.

Because once you see the blocker, you can move with intention.
What once felt stuck can become the turning point for your fulfilment and success.

If this resonates with you or someone in your network, let’s connect.
